The land Bilbao is built on was inhabited long before the city was founded, and so it is testified by archaeological remains found underground. The history of Bilbao starts in the Middle Ages when it appears as an emerging commercial area which starts developing from the beginning of Medieval Times.
Between 1989 and 1992 the Bilbao Metropolitan Area Revitalization Project is designed with the aim of structuring the Bilbao of the Third Millennium. The result was the new perspective of Bilbao as a city of top class services in a qualified, competitive and modern industrial region, reflecting the conviction that in a developed economic environment projected towards the XXI century, industry and services are inseparable.
This nearly 18.000.000.000 Euros revitalization Plan has generated several emblematic projects which have transformed the new international image of this Basque Metropoli. Famous and internationally acclaimed architects and engineers such as Frank O'Ghery (Guggenheim Museum), Norman Foster (the underground), Santiago Calatrava (Calatrava Bridge and airport), Cesar Pelli (Abandoibarra Development Site), Federico Soriano (Congress and Music Centre) and Stirling and Wilford (Inter-modal Station) etc, have joined for ever to the new Bilbao of the XXI century.
